Being placed under hypnosis has been described as being placed in a trance or dream like state; this is achieved by tricking the mind into suppressing the conscious mind and allowing the subconscious mind to take the forefront. It is thought that the subconscious mind is more open to suggestion and imaginary play than our conscious mind. This would explain why in a state of hypnotism, that people are willing to act a way that they might not normally act.

It is a common misconception, that hypnotism allows the hypnotist to control the mind; this is not true, but to the contrary, they are accessing the subconscious mind. The subconscious mind is more open to suggestion because it controls the body’s automatic functions such as breathing, the heart beat, all of the “how to’s” of the body, the subconscious mind is responsible for.

For example, people don’t have to think about walking, they simply do; nor do they have to think about reading or tying a shoe, once a skill is learned our brain puts the skill onto the “auto pilot” section of our brains, this is our subconscious mind. As it is accustomed to reacting automatically is not hard to imagine that it would have fewer inhibitions than our conscious mind.

Because the subconscious mind is so sensitive to suggestion, the use of hypnosis in a medical capacity is highly debated, while it can sometimes be useful there is also risk of imprinting the brain with false memories. These false memories are thought to happen because something is suggested while the mind is in this highly relaxed and heightened awareness state. People who are especially susceptible to hypnosis can even experience memory loss from the experience.

The human brain itself is an enigma to the scientific world, everything that is learned about the brain raises more questions; this is why understanding hypnotism can be so difficult, every brain reacts a little different to the experience and some brains are not affected by it at all.

Scientist have found that for a person to be hypnotized there must be certain factors: the brain must be completely relaxed, allowing the subconscious mind to take the foreground of the mind; the person must want to be hypnotized or at least feel the social pressure to perform; and the person has to be willing to do whatever is suggested of them, while the subconscious mind is more open to suggestion it still will not put the body into danger, the survival instinct is still prevalent even in the subconscious mind.

Several researchers are beginning to espouse the connection between hypnosis and sleep, while others are attempting to use hypnosis to help people sleep. Similar to chemical sleeping aids, hypnosis is said to have the same relaxing effects on the mind and body, allowing people to drift off to sleep quickly and easily.

It is no secret that hypnosis and sleep are related when people are in the trance-like state of hypnosis. After all, most hypnotists tell their subjects they are going to sleep and that their eyelids are getting heavy. However, it is not unusual for a person to experience self-hypnosis and sleep at least a few times during their seemingly waking hours.

For example, driving to or from a familiar destination you may find yourself at the end of your journey with absolutely no recollection of how you reached it. Your mind may have wandered into its own subconscious and while your conscious thoughts may have been on the task at hand, your mind was experiencing hypnosis and sleep in its subconscious.

There are many self-hypnosis options available and some CDs can be played as you attempt to fall asleep. With the hypnosis and sleep CD playing in the background, many are claiming a valid benefit and deeper undisturbed sleep than with medically prescribed sleep aids.

Relax Yourself Into Sleep Mode

Being able to close off conscious thoughts and bring total relaxation to your mind is only part of the process of using hypnosis and sleep aids, as your body also has to be relaxed enough. Usually a slight drop in core body temperature will be realized before going to sleep, with the core temperature slightly lower than that of the extremities. Once a person’s mind is totally relaxed, the body typically follows, with deep sleep not far behind.

Listening to a voice telling you about how sleep you are getting and how great it will be to wake up rested, is not the aim of hypnosis and sleep sounds usually available. Rather restful and relaxing sounds are included in a manner and order in which your mind slowly succumbs to the unspoken suggestion that you are going to go to sleep.

Typically, the hypnosis and sleep recording will last just until the person is on the verge of sleep and then end, allowing them to fall into a restful sleep, waking up rested and having much more energy.

Since hypnosis is a method of achieving total relaxation and allowing others access to your subconscious thoughts, it would seem that anxiety and hypnosis would go well together with hypnosis being a natural help for anxiety. And while hypnosis can be used as therapy for anxiety, it can also be hindered by it as well.

Studies have shown that about 30 percent of the population can easily be placed into what is usually termed a hypnotic trance and another 20 percent will be extremely difficult to persuade. The remainder of the population can go either way, mostly depending on their mood at the moment and their level of anxiety and hypnosis may be easy.

Anxiety, however at the thought of giving up control of their mind to another person, may prevent hypnosis from being successful and the thought of someone else having control over the mind and what they may do while under hypnosis, brings on additional anxiety and hypnosis may not be possible.

Stress Depends On Your Definition

You control the definition of stress as it pertains to your life and situational anxiety and hypnosis can go together like the proverbial hand and glove. In any given situation such as asking for a raise, going to traffic court or prepping for surgery a certain degree of stress is involved, which will invoke anxiety to a level equal to the level of stress. You can move past this anxiety and hypnosis can help, by allowing your subconscious mind to accept a new definition of stress for that given circumstance.

Hypnotism is not about altering circumstances, but about altering how your mind perceives and understands the circumstances. How well you can accept what is going on around you and how well your mind adapts to this new knowledge will determine how your anxiety is transformed into calm feelings.

There was a phrase that said stress was mind over matter, and when looking at anxiety and hypnosis aids for stress, it really is mind over matter. If you can get the negative thoughts out of your mind, the positive message will help make it so the outcome does not matter.

Experts agree that stress is a state of mind, depending on how your mind deals with the current circumstance and its possible outcomes. By combining your anxiety and hypnosis techniques you can alter how your mind perceives the potential outcomes and can more positively deal with the situation.

Most people vividly remember the scene in Star Wars when Obi Wan Kenobi looks into the eyes of a guard and convinces him that the three wanted fugitives right in front of him are not the people he is looking for. Wouldn’t it be great to have similar influence over people? The term conversational hypnosis suggests that we can.

Of course, conversational hypnosis is not as simple as it sounds. Rather, it is a series of well-choreographed strategies and manipulations that may bring others around to your point of view.

The principles of conversational hypnosis were first conceived by the great hypnotist and psychotherapist Milton Erickson. Erickson believed that trance states were not rare occurrences that had to be elaborately induced. He believed people slip into trance states several times a day, for instance, when they are waiting for a bus or concentrating very hard on something they are reading.

Erickson also theorized that directly trying to induce a trance state in someone or trying to give them direct suggestions might lead to resistance. He preferred to use rapport, indirect suggestions, and confusion to induce trance states and influence compliance.

Rapport

The first step in conversational hypnosis is creating a rapport with the subject. This means agreeing with what they have to say. For instance, if the subject says, "There’s no way out of this," the proper response is, "You’re right. There’s no way out."

Confusion

The next step in conversational hypnosis is to confuse the issue. Sometimes a simple question works. "But even if there is no way out, can you be absolutely sure that a solution won’t pop into your mind in the next minute or so?"

Another technique used to create confusion in conversational hypnosis is to encourage resistance, perhaps by saying, "No one could solve that problem. It’s simply too complex. There’s absolutely no way out. You don’t have a chance…" At some point, the subject will probably start arguing with you that the problem is not so unsolvable after all!

Still another confusion technique is to suggest that the subject do more of something that isn’t working. For instance, an obese subject might be encouraged to gain weight.

Suggestion

The final step in conversational hypnosis is to make an indirect suggestion such as, "You’re feeling a bit less hopeless now, aren’t you?" or "I don’t know why, but it seems to me you look more optimistic than you did a few minutes ago."

Needless to say, conversational hypnosis is no easy feat, and it is best left to professionals.

If you would like to know more about conversational hypnosis, several websites offer online courses on the topic. You might also try reading a clinical biography of Milton Erickson.

Clinical hypnosis is a method of communicating with the subconscious mind in order to establish pattern and behavioral changes that can help you improve your health, personal life style and appearance.

Who Practices Clinical Hypnosis

Clinical hypnosis is usually practiced by qualified physicians only who fully understand your body functions as well as the way a change pattern should be approached in each individual because what may work very well in some, but may in fact fail in your case because of some existing medical condition.

Hypnosis is gaining popularity amongst people around the world because it does not have any side effects and can help in dire circumstances such as quitting smoking, alcoholism as well as help with problems such as depression, self confidence and losing weight.

Does Clinical Hypnosis Work?

Yes, it does. However the time frame in which you will see results will depend from person to person. When going through hypnosis therapy your whole body and mind will suffer alterations and that is not done overnight but gradually with a lot of work and determination especially when working with a difficult situation such as getting rid of a habit or dealing with feeling such as depression or self esteem.

Clinical hypnosis is not brain washing as many like to believe but a way to engage your own body and mind to take control and commit to doing what is right for you such as quitting smoking.

Do It Yourself

Clinical hypnosis can be performed at home through the help of books in order to first understand your body and mind as well as CDs and DVDs, which will walk you step by step through the entire procedure in order for you to achieve the desired results.

However, do not expect results from the very first session but have the patience of performing the procedure correctly for the required amount of times without interruption as then you may break the cycle and will have to start everything from the beginning.

Clinical hypnosis can help you in every area of your life when performed as indicated and you can enjoy a long, happy and healthy life again without drugs and medications, which almost always will have some side effects. Learn about hypnosis before you start any experiment and if possible try to attend a few professional sessions in order to experience and feel the actual effects from a professional before you try it at home.

Can a Person Really Perform Self Hypnosis?

Being Under Self Hypnosis

Being under self hypnosis may happen more than most people think, by definition, hypnosis is a state at which the conscious mind is extremely relaxed, and allows the subconscious mind to be prevalent. By this definition we are self hypnotized several times a week if not daily; dreaming, reading, watching movies, and watching television can all place a persons mind in a hypnotic state.

These activities can all be considered self hypnosis because we put our selves into these situations with the intent of escaping reality or forgetting about normal troubles for a time. Most people don’t realize that when they are so absorbed in what they are watching or reading that they are hypnotized. Focusing on a book or television program so intently that the story seems real while being watched is self hypnosis; because the conscious mind is focusing so intently on the program, the subconscious is able to almost trick the mind into believing the story is real.

Essentially self hypnosis is a person focusing all their attention on something so intently that other exterior influences are not as predominant or distracting as they might normally be. This is an example of self hypnosis, the viewer was so intent on the film, it allowed the subconscious mind to internalize the fantasy it was viewing to make the scenario seem real.

When watching a horror film many people identify with the characters being chased by whatever “evil” force that is pursuing them, to an extent that when the characters are startled or feel anxiety the person watching the film will also experience these feelings, as such they may jump or start in their places.

Meditation

Meditation is an intentional state of self hypnosis; people who can meditate put all thoughts out of the mind in order to allow their subconscious mind to act more or less on its own. Often to achieve this, the person meditating will focus on an object or a mental image and use mental imagery to eliminate the thoughts of the conscious mind.

A person may wish to relax from a stressful day at work but is unable to “wind down” from the day; they decide to turn off all exterior stimuli: television, telephones, sometimes even lights. They will then sit or lie in a comfortable position and try to focus their mind on a relaxing image such as a quiet spot an a beach, and when thoughts of the material world enter the mind, because of the self hypnotic state, the thoughts can be turned into images and dismissed as part of the illusion and nothing more.
Self Hypnosis in High Stress Situations

Many people meditate in high stress situation, or sometimes use what is called mental imagery; both of these terms are essentially self hypnosis. Women often use self hypnosis, or mental imagery to help alleviate the pain of labor and child birth; this principle is applied to drug free pain relief methods such as Lamaze and Bradley birthing methods.

In Lamaze the person will use rhythmic breathing to induce a daydream like state, to escape the pain of labor, and keep focused on maintaining strength and stamina for the work ahead in delivery. The Bradley birthing method utilizes slow breathing and mental imagery to achieve the same pain dulling effect and mental clarity.

What Happens in Stage Hypnosis?

Stage hypnosis is also known as entertainment hypnosis; many willing participants are brought on stage and given specific instructions and commands which trigger the minds natural hypnotic response. These participants are often given tasks to complete for entertainment purposes only, and then are told to come out of the state, these people may or may or may not remember what went on.

People are susceptible to stage hypnosis because they want to be, these people often volunteer for the opportunity to be hypnotized in front of people. The person performing the stage hypnosis will often employ a rapid trigger method of hypnosis; by giving short direct commands to the individual they are able to access the subconscious mind quickly and with out much resistance, especially since the person volunteered and wants to be hypnotized.

Another factor to consider is the fact that many people are very susceptible to peer-pressure, and as such may feel even more compelled to follow the entertainer’s suggestions as they feel that is what is expected out of them. This can make accessing the subject’s subconscious mind even easier for the entertainer, and is probably why entertainers often like use stage hypnosis in groups.

Magicians

Magicians often use stage hypnosis to thrill and amaze their audience, they will use the power of suggestion to convince certain audience members to act a certain way or visualize a certain number to make their tricks seem more real. Some magicians are so good at this, that they are able to hypnotize entire rooms of people at once; using subliminal messaging along with the rapid hypnotism technique is one way magicians can achieve this effect.

History of Stage Hypnosis

People have tried to understand hypnotism since the 1700’s, and even at this time stage hypnosis was sometimes used to entertain at parties. Many people think that this kind of stage hypnosis is mind control; this is not true, the person performing the hypnotism has simply accessed the brain on a subconscious level, and has made influential suggestions, which in turn brought about a specific reaction.

The fact that modern society induces hypnosis so often by watching lots of movies and television, may contribute to the success of entertainer’s ability to perform stage hypnosis; as people are accustomed to letting their conscious minds take a side seat to be absorbed in something else that they find entertaining. Meditation and therapeutic hypnosis can also be more easily achieved do to this fact, though many people do find it difficult to relax enough without the focus of a television or book.

Smoking And Hypnosis: Does It Really Work?

They say the average person who tries to quit smoking quits five times before they finally kick the habit. Smoking causes cancer, emphysema, as well as many other diseases and disorders. Not to mention the havoc it wreaks on our bodies over time. Yet, with all we know about smoking today, millions of people still smoke on a regular basis, some even smoking more than a pack a day. Smoking is not good for you, everyone know it, but it’s so addictive that it’s almost impossible to quit. You may quit for a day, or even a few hours before that urge for another cigarette becomes almost unbearable causing you to drive to the store to pick up a pack or to bum one off a stranger just so you can get a drag to hopefully curb those urges you’re having. Many people have tried all the patches and gums to no avail and now more and more people are turning towards smoking and hypnosis.

A Great Way To Break The Smoking Habit

Smoking and hypnosis may not seem like they go hand in hand but, the fact is, hypnosis can be a great way to curb this nasty habit that leaves your lungs black, your teeth yellow and your clothes smelling like an ashtray. But how does smoking and hypnosis work? To find out, search your local yellow pages for a hypnotist in your area. Smoking and hypnosis have, indeed, gone hand in hand ever since hypnosis became a professional practice. By putting you in a relaxed, hypnotized, state, the hypnotist can urge you to quit smoking by speaking directly to your subconscious. The idea is that when you are confronted with smoking while awake, the urge will be gone because your subconscious will be programmed to avoid it.

For your smoking and hypnosis consultation with a certified hypnotist, the hypnotist will determine if you can indeed be helped through hypnosis. The hypnotist will then put you under using any techniques they have been certified to use. They will then program your subconscious to avoid smoking once you awaken. Does this work, however?

Hypnosis is effective because it uses the powerful human mind, your mind, to help control your body and your harmful urges. With enough sessions, you will find yourself stopping smoking for good. However, to quit smoking and for hypnosis to work, you have to believe in it whole heartedly. A person who doesn’t take the hypnosis seriously will not be hypnotized. You have to go along with what the hypnotist says, without skepticism. If you doubt it will work, it won’t and you’ll be back to smoking in no time.

If you do believe, though, you’ll stop smoking for good and you can tell your friends all about smoking and hypnosis. Who knows, you may be one of the special ones that quits on the first try. Just remember to avoid situations where you used to smoke, as in around other smokers. That’s the best way to pick the habit again as it once more has a chance to take hold of you.

The Truth About Weight Loss Through Hypnosis

Weight loss is a huge issue for many people in the world. It can be extremely difficult balancing healthy eating and exercise with working full-time, creating families and having a social life. Weight gain can be caused by a number of issues and have a major impact on a person’s life. This is probably why more and more people are turning to

weight loss through hypnosis. Before the critics stop reading, I am not advocating the theory of weight loss through hypnosis nor am I proclaiming that it is easy to lose weight through this method alone. Because weight loss is of such importance in today’s world, people are turning to various aids such as hypnosis in order for them to quicken the effects or maybe because they are simply so desperate for results.

Studies have shown that weight loss through hypnosis alone is not particularly successful. This is probably because you cannot just train the mind to stop eating; it does not work the same as using hypnosis to stop smoking for example. However, what hypnosis can do is encourage weight loss by preparing the mind for the battle and motivating the person into working that much harder. Sometimes people subconsciously negate their own efforts at losing weight due to self-esteem issues or perhaps because they do not know any other way of life. Hypnosis can help address these issues and is a well known form of therapy in today’s world.

How Weight Loss Through Hypnosis Might Work

Psychologists often use hypnotherapy to unblock their patient’s minds to the real issues buried within. So why not use hypnosis to unlock the issues that a dieter has with their weight and lifestyle? Hypnosis, if used properly, could help a person with self-esteem problems to actually face up to them and acknowledge the fact that they could be using food as a substitute for something else. Sometimes getting to the source of the problem is half the battle and can lead the way to an improvement of lifestyle, health and diet for the person concerned.

Weight loss through hypnosis is not achieved by a magical cure, it is ideally a way to release the mind in order to re-train it’s thinking and habits. Eating through force of habit and not taking sufficient exercise can be learned throughout someone’s lifetime and take a huge effort to change. Hypnosis can provide enough motivation and strength to force a change and lead a better lifestyle. It is important to remember that hypnosis will not do all the work; the person must be willing to accept that a change needs to be made and be prepared to work harder to achieve this change and meet their goals. Weight loss is generally caused by good diet and enough exercise and as simple as this may sound, many people need help in adjusting their minds and temperament enough to win the battle with their weight.

Can Crime and Hypnosis Be Related?

Hypnosis is a practice where a connection is made with the subconscious mind in order to alter a pattern of thinking or acting in order to improve a state of health, relieve pain and/or improve one’s personality and self esteem.

Hypnosis has been used in medical practices and therapies on a number of patients in order to improve their present state when all other ways have failed, for example, hypnosis is used often to help patients deal with depression and/or terminal diseases.

How Can Crime and Hypnosis Be Related?

Because hypnosis works with the subconscious mind in order to alter it and change your thinking and behavioral pattern it has been suggested more than once that crime and hypnosis may be related, however no proof has been issued to sustain the claim. The problem in believing in crime and hypnosis is that usually it takes more then one session in order to change one’s way of behaving or thinking especially when dealing with crime like making someone commit a crime that is not in his or her nature.

Crime and hypnosis can be related however, when a therapist does not respect the wishes of the patient and does not follow the desired or requested pattern needed or requested by the patient to cure.

Again, crime and hypnosis can be connected when someone uses it to induce a pattern of thinking and/or change someone’s behavior without their consent or knowledge. However, it is very hard to perform hypnosis on someone without his or her knowledge and therefore it is not a common crime in hypnosis practice.

Practice Hypnosis on Yourself And Avoid Crime

Many people today practice hypnosis on themselves by using the help of CDs and DVDs as well as books for guidance and assistance; you can also find many online sites that will help you understand your body in order to perform hypnosis correctly and achieve desired results as soon as possible.

How Soon Can You See Results from Hypnosis Therapy?

Depending on your present state of health and stress level you can see results as soon as the first session or at times depending on what you are trying to improve can take as long as months. It is important that you follow the exact procedures and indications provided through the CD or DVD when practicing hypnosis on yourself and if you are following a hypnosis therapy, you must finish the required session in order to ensure the desired pattern has set in as you wanted.
